DESCRIPTION: France, oversize Comtoise clock, 8 day, time and strike, weight driven movement with verge escapement, thread suspension with rear-hanging pendulum in an iron post and plate frame, 14 inch pewter chapter ring with Roman numerals, pierced brass spandrels, single iron hand in the form of a fleur de lis.
CONDITION: The rear plate of the iron case has a break with a very old riveted repair. Side doors are absent. The dial has some tarnish. The iron front is not a perfect square which confirms that this clock was intended for a case. Iron hand, posts, arbors, and plates with some surface oxidation. Simple, robust frame components within the movement with little ornamentation. Top of case shows both chamfer-head square screws and large taper pins. The tension spring on the four-blade iron fly is partially broken. Time side winding arbor is twisted. Height of suspension shroud is 3 inches. Large, loud bell. No pendulum or weights are included with this clock. This clock was sold by Ivoire Saint-Etienne on June 2nd 2012 as lot number 4.
